School Counselor

 

QUALIFICATIONS

M.A. Degree

Valid Colorado Certificate/License-Properly Endorsed

At least three years teaching experience preferred.

 

REPORTS TO

Immediate Supervisor:  Building Principal

 

JOB SUMMARY

  • The school Counselor is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating and maintaining

those guidance and counseling programs and services which are designed to provide information

                and direct counseling services to students, their parents and teachers; so as to facilitate the

                academic, social and career growth and adjustment of each student.

  • Some duties only apply to counselors at the secondary level.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Assistance

  • Assist in the effective placement of students.
  • Assist with the registration process and scheduling when appropriate.
  • Facilitates parent support and parent education efforts as may be needed.
  • Provide students with information and assistance which they can utilize to gain understanding

and insight into their growth and adjustment problems.

  • Provide for the orientation of students new to the building and students progressing from one

educational level to another.

  • Provides information to students and staff members as the guidance and counseling services

available in the school.

  • Assists with credit recovery and on-line services when applicable.
  • Assists with gifted and talented programs in developing the ALP’s.
  • Provide continuous evaluation of the guidance and counseling programs and services.
  • Identify and pursue significant personal growth activities following a systematic plan.
  • Assist in informing the community about school and its programs acting as primary contact

between school and the students home/parents.

  • Maintain appropriate records and submit required reports on time.
  • Assist in standardized test results with students, parents and staff.
  • Implement the school guidance program through the use of effective instructional skills and

carefully plan the structure of group sessions for all students.

  • Counselors will abide by a dress code which demonstrates professionalism with students,

parents, and other staff members.

  • Interpreting cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests.
  • Assisting students in maintain a high rate of attendance.
  • Providing counseling to students who are tardy or absent
  • Providing counseling to students as to appropriate school dress
  • providing teachers with suggestions for effective classroom management as it relates to specific students
  • helping the school principal identify and resolve student issues, needs, and problems
  • advocating for students at individual education plan meeting, student study teams and school attendance review boards (truancy)
  • analyzing disaggregated data
  • building assessment coordinator
  • support  students for post-secondary education by assisting with scholarship applications
  • pulling weekly eligibility for the staff
  • monitoring attendance
  • organizing and attending attendance meeting with administration, students and parents for truancy

 

Special Education

  • Direct, coordinate and facilitate the referral process for RTI (Response to Intervention)
  • Under the direction of the Administrator, plans and implements particular family support

intervention efforts through IEP (Individual Education Plan) staffing or DHS (Department

                Human Services) referrals.

  • Assist school personnel in identifying students in need of special help, providing such help

if possible and facilitating referral assistance if needed.

  • Provide information to teachers concerning new methods, techniques and trends for

working with traditional and non-traditional learning students.

  • Assist students with short term support and guidance and when appropriate refer students to

mental health professional.

  • Assist in testing services.
  • Assist in supplementary testing and interpretation for specialized needs.

 

Student Career Development

  • Collaborate with post-secondary schools when applicable.
  • Facilitate the admission and scholarship process for post-secondary education when applicable.
  • Provide students with appropriate career information assisting them in developing career plans

and choices when applicable.

  • Supervise the maintenance of cumulative records, insuring appropriate and accurate information

is recorded and see that students are assigned appropriate classes for graduation requirement

where applicable.

  • Provide students with appropriate career information, assisting them in developing career and

  • Kite-DLM testing for Severe Needs Students (and other assessments for severe needs students)

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ten, eleven or twelve month year.  Salary and work year is to be established by  the Trinidad School District #1 Board of Education.
